Woman shot dead on San Germán highway identified as Melanie Rivera Avilés

Victim of shooting death in San Germán identified
Authorities identified the woman killed in the early hours of Tuesday in the Minillas neighbourhood of San Germán as Melanie Rivera Avilés, 38 years old, according to primerahora.com.
The crime occurred at kilometre 36.2 of the PR-102 highway, opposite the former Villa Chelín. Around 2:00 a.m., the San Germán district station received a call alerting them to gunshots in the area.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Rivera Avilés' body lying face down on the grassy area of the highway, with multiple bullet wounds. The victim was wearing a black sleeveless blouse, blue denim shorts, and was barefoot.
More than 25 casings of different calibres and a $20 note were recovered at the scene.
Authorities activated femicide protocol. The motive for the crime remains under investigation.
Officer Yahaira Vélez Soto, from the Homicide Division of the Mayagüez CIC, processed the scene together with officer Zuanett Pérez Ríos, from the Domestic Violence Division, and prosecutors André Fernández Vera and Josué Ortiz Milán.
