Police officer charged following incident at Metropolitan Drug Division headquarters
The Public Integrity Division and Comptroller Affairs presented three criminal charges against officer Jean Emil Rivera Hiraldo, of the Puerto Rico police, for actions that occurred at the headquarters of the Metropolitan Drug Division in Guaynabo, according to reporting by periodicolaperla.com.
Justice Department Secretary Lourdes Gómez Torres confirmed details of the case. According to the investigation, during the night of the day before the announcement, Rivera Hiraldo used a fire extinguisher to strike a door at the headquarters. An officer on duty heard the blows and observed him holding the fire extinguisher.
When questioned about his actions, Rivera Hiraldo stated that a lieutenant had sent him to recover $1,500. He was later found in the evidence room counting money and in possession of a bat.
Prosecutor José Villarmarzo Rodríguez filed three charges against Rivera Hiraldo: aggravated property damage, attempted unlawful appropriation and violation of the Firearms Act, under articles 199 and 182 of Puerto Rico's Penal Code and Article 6.06 of the Firearms Act.
Judge Miriam Stefan Acta, of the First Instance Court of Bayamón, found probable cause for arrest only on the charge of aggravated property damage and set bail at $10,000, which Rivera Hiraldo posted. For the charges of attempted unlawful appropriation and violation of the Firearms Act, no probable cause was found, so the Public Ministry requested an appeal hearing.
The preliminary hearing was scheduled for 3 November. The investigation was conducted by officer Vilna Rodríguez Rodríguez, of the Special Investigations Division.
