A judge of the Court of First Instance of Bayamón sentenced Ransell J. Álamo Rivera on Thursday to 55 years and three months in prison for the murder of Mariela Crystal Seda Ocasio, 23, and for destruction of evidence, according to telemundopr.com.
The facts occurred on 13 April 2024 in Carolina. The court imposed the convicted man 50 years in prison for second-degree murder and three additional years for destruction of evidence, in accordance with articles 93, 94 and 285 of Law No. 146-2012 of the Puerto Rico Penal Code. Both sentences will be served concurrently.
At the request of the Bayamón Prosecution, the judge applied the aggravating factor of recidivism due to a previous conviction of Álamo Rivera in federal jurisdiction. The aggravating factor increased the sentences by 10 per cent, adding five years to the murder sentence and three months to the destruction of evidence sentence, bringing the total sentence to 55 years and three months.
According to the investigation, the convicted man confessed to causing the death of Seda Ocasio on 13 April and abandoned her body on Eucalipto street in the municipality of Toa Baja. The young woman had last been seen by her mother on 12 April, when she left her residence in Hills Brothers, in Río Piedras.
Federal authorities took custody of Álamo Rivera, 27, on 24 May. The convicted man confessed to the crime and led agents to the place where the victim's remains were found.
