Puerto Rico Supreme Court upholds prosecution for Anthonieska Avilés murder case
Puerto Rico's highest judicial authority dismissed on Thursday the requests for procedural interruption and extraordinary remedies presented by the legal representatives of Anthonieska Avilés Cabrera. This was made known by Justice Secretary Lourdes Gómez Torres through a written statement.
The official indicated that the position of the Public Ministry is strengthened by this ruling, as the sentence from the lower court remains in effect. In this way, Avilés Cabrera will continue to be prosecuted for the crime of first-degree murder linked to the death of the young woman Gabriela Nicole Pratts Rosario.
The defendant is accused of intentionally causing death with full awareness of her actions, in accordance with applicable criminal law provisions.
Additionally, it was confirmed that the defendant maintains her fitness to stand trial. This means she possesses the necessary understanding of the nature of the proceedings against her and can effectively assist her defence counsel in preparing her legal strategy.
Gómez Torres reaffirmed the Justice Department's commitment to the victim and her loved ones. "We will not rest until we bring justice to Gabriela Nicole and her family," she stated.
The head of the judicial department assured that the case will receive proper attention, with professionalism, sensitivity towards the family members and promptness at each procedural stage, in accordance with the state's duty to protect the population and those harmed by criminal conduct.
