Tax Authority warns of digital fraud attempts related to income tax
Cybercriminals are sending email messages purporting to be from the Tax and Customs Authority (AT), in an attempt to deceive Portuguese taxpayers during the period for submitting income tax return declarations.
The AT issued an official statement on its website warning of this fraudulent campaign. The malicious emails inform recipients that a request has been registered to modify their income tax return, inviting them to click on a hyperlink to confirm or reject that change.
The tax authority clarifies that these messages have no official origin. The purpose of the attackers is to induce citizens to access malicious websites or to make unwarranted money transfers. The AT makes clear that it never requests such actions via email.
Beyond the scenario of alterations to the declaration, fraudsters use other arguments to attract victims. These include alleged automatic recalculation of tax, a purported need to verify personal data on the Tax Portal or the sending of an electronic invoice associated with the taxpayer identification number.
The tax administration appeals to the population to completely ignore these communications and not interact with the links contained in them. The deadline for submission of income tax return declarations for income obtained in 2025 runs between 1 April and 30 June, a period that fraudsters exploit to multiply their approaches.
