Bernie Ecclestone, former head of Formula 1, was arrested on Monday at Tires Aerodrome in Cascais following a routine operation upon arrival of his private jet, according to sol.iol.pt citing information from Correio da Manhã.
The 95-year-old Briton was carrying a rifle and was arrested by officers from the PSP's Aeronautical Division. It was not known at the time of publication whether the situation would result in a hearing before a judge or merely the constitution of him as a suspect.
The arrest occurs during a period in which security at the aerodrome has been reinforced, with personnel from the PSP and Judicial Police ensuring more rigorous inspection at the facilities.
Ecclestone was travelling aboard a Dassault Falcon 7X, a private jet valued at approximately 40 million euros. The businessman currently divides his life between Portugal and Switzerland, and owns several properties, including a house in Brazil.
In Portugal, he resides in a property in Cascais with approximately 2,000 square metres, also valued at approximately 40 million euros. The purchase was made by his wife, Fabiana Flosi, from Marco Galinha, a businessman and former president of Global Media Group — a deal pointed to as the largest private sale of a property in Portugal.
Bernard Charles Ecclestone was linked to the leadership of Formula 1 for approximately four decades, between 1970 and 2017, transforming the championship into one of the world's most lucrative sporting competitions. He also played a relevant role in Formula 1's return to Portugal in 1984, when the Estoril Circuit once again hosted a round of the world championship.
