32-year-old Brazilian detained in Santarém for sexual abuse of a minor
Portuguese security forces have apprehended a 32-year-old Brazilian citizen in Santarém. The individual was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by the South American country.
The PSP stated in a statement cited by Correio da Manhã that the detainee is suspected of crimes of rape of a vulnerable person. The abuse is believed to have occurred on at least ten separate occasions throughout 2022. The victim was the defendant's stepdaughter, a 14-year-old adolescent at the time of the events. The man was in a de facto union with the minor's mother.
Following his detention, the defendant was taken to PSP cells in Estremoz. Subsequently, he will be brought before the Court of Appeal of Évora. The Brazilian awaits the beginning of extradition proceedings. The maximum sentence provided for the crimes with which he is charged is 18 years in prison.
