A 45-year-old Brazilian citizen was arrested by the Judicial Police (PJ) under strong suspicion of having murdered the couple for whom he worked as a caretaker for seven years, in Lagos, in the Algarve. The case was reported by oglobo.globo.com.
The victims are a 79-year-old French businessman and a 62-year-old Romanian businesswoman, who had been residents of Portugal for several years and were linked to the healthcare sector. The bodies were discovered at the couple's residence, located in a beachside and touristy area of the Algarve.
The PJ described the crime as a "picture of extreme violence". According to the investigation, the victims were killed with a blunt object that has not yet been located. Following the homicides, the suspect dragged the bodies into a water cistern on the property and attempted to accelerate their decomposition with chemical products to hamper identification.
The Brazilian was detained in possession of "substantial amounts of money and valuable objects presumed to belong to the victims". The motive for the crime was not clarified by the authorities.
The suspect has no recorded criminal record and will be brought before a judge for his first interrogation, where the applicable preventive measures will be determined.
