Public Prosecutor searches PJ in Football Leaks case putting director Carlos Cabreiro under pressure
The Public Prosecutor's Office conducted searches on Wednesday at the Judicial Police's Unit for the Prevention and Technological Support (UPAT), located in Barro, according to Correio da Manhã and confirmed by record.pt. The operation is part of a complaint filed by coordinator David Freitas against the national director of the PJ, Carlos Cabreiro — a complaint that resulted in Freitas being transferred and a disciplinary process being opened against him.
In a statement, the Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the searches are being carried out in the context of suspicions of crimes of "abuse of power and perjury" in the Football Leaks case, the case involving hacker Rui Pinto. The PJ, for its part, stated it is collaborating with the judicial authorities.
The search and seizure operations include the presence of Public Prosecutor's Office magistrates, inspectors from the Tax Authority and computer experts. The aim is to gather evidence that will allow confirmation or refutation of the facts contained in the complaint that prompted the investigation, relating to alleged illegal wiretapping in the Football Leaks case.
CNN Portugal journalist Sandra Felgueiras, cited by record.pt, analysed the seriousness of the moment for the head of the institution: "By the end of today, Carlos Cabreiro will be in a very fragile position."
Following the proceedings, the judge responsible for the case will hear the six investigators involved on 16 October.
