Forensic divers comb Tagus searching for young man missing after boat party
Julian Amaral, 23 years old, has been missing since Wednesday after attending a party aboard a maritime-tourism vessel on the Tagus River, according to CNN Portugal.
The event took place on Tuesday, between 18:30 and 23:55, departing and arriving at Doca de Alcântara. At the end of the excursion, a cousin of the young man alerted the vessel's master to his disappearance.
Since 08:00 on Friday, a forensic diving team and underwater operations unit from the Maritime Police has been conducting searches in the area of Doca da Rocha de Conde d'Óbidos. The operation also involves resources from the Port Authority of Lisbon and the Local Command of the Maritime Police in Lisbon, which are patrolling the river with vessels.
The circumstances of the disappearance remain unclear. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the young man fell into the water, but there is no confirmation of what happened.
According to Angolan media, Julian Amaral is reportedly the nephew of Angola's Defence Minister, Lúcio Gonçalves Amaral. He was on holiday in Portugal, staying at a cousin's house in Montijo.
