A male body was located on Monday night in a pine forest area in Montemor-o-Velho, in Coimbra district. The victim, an individual of approximately 40 years old, was found by a GNR soldier in the reserve who raised the alarm.

According to Correio da Manhã, the corpse was in agricultural land near the locality of Mata, in a location of difficult access by dirt track. The man lay face down, approximately two hundred metres from the vehicle he regularly drove.

Formal identification has not yet been completed, as the body showed a high degree of decomposition. The authorities suspect, however, that it is an individual reported missing four days ago. The victim lived in the area with relatives, although he was not a known figure in the surrounding settlements.

The Central Judicial Police is conducting the investigation. The elements collected so far do not suggest the involvement of other people in the death. The autopsy carried out on Tuesday did not clarify the cause of death, with additional examinations being awaited. There is the possibility that the death is linked to an overdose of illicit substances.

The discovery generated concern among the inhabitants of the region. A resident, Fernanda Cunha, confirmed that there had already been talk of someone missing and that he has now "turned up dead". Another resident mentioned that robberies have been frequent in the area, which forces residents to keep their houses permanently locked.
