Elvas couple charged with coercive lending and kidnapping remanded in custody
The PSP arrested a couple in Elvas, in the district of Portalegre, strongly suspected of the crimes of kidnapping, extortion and aggravated threatening, according to observador.pt. The two suspects — a 42-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman — were brought before a judge at Elvas Court on Friday and remanded in custody.
The arrests took place on Wednesday, following an investigation conducted by the District Command of the PSP in Portalegre that "lasted approximately one year".
According to the PSP statement, the couple engaged in lending money to various victims and then proceeded jointly to the coercive collection of their respective debts. "Which were never fully repaid, perpetuating themselves over time", the document states.
Following the arrests, house searches were carried out at two residences associated with the suspects in the city of Elvas. The authorities seized gold items with an estimated total value of €12,914, €4,235 in cash, three motor vehicles — two of high engine capacity — and various documents related to the criminal activity.
Elvas Court applied the most serious precautionary measure to the two detainees: remand in custody.
