Caretaker suspected of killing businessman couple in Lagos remanded in custody
Natalino Cordeiro, aged 45, was remanded in custody on Saturday after being detained by the Judicial Police, with the collaboration of the GNR in Lagos, in the early hours of the same day. According to sicnoticias.pt, the man is suspected of committing two crimes of aggravated homicide and desecration of a corpse, with the victims found inside a water tank at the property where they lived, in Lagos.
The victims are a 79-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman, businesspeople in the healthcare sector, who had been living in Portugal for several years. The suspect worked as a caretaker at the couple's property for seven years — a position that arose after the owners had been victims of a previous robbery.
Extreme violence and attempted concealment of bodies
According to the investigation, the crimes are believed to have taken place in the victims' home and were marked by extreme violence. The couple are believed to have been attacked with a blunt object, suffering serious injuries that resulted in death.
After the murders, Cordeiro is believed to have dragged the bodies into a water tank on the property, with the intention of concealing the corpses. The suspect is also believed to have used chemical products to accelerate the decomposition of the bodies.
Confession to friend led to arrest
After committing the crimes, Cordeiro confessed what had happened to a friend, who subsequently alerted the authorities. When he was located by the GNR in Lagos in the vicinity of the property, the suspect was in possession of a large sum of money and several valuable objects that the investigation indicates belonged to the victims.
Complex operation to recover bodies
The recovery of the corpses required a lengthy and technically complex operation, due to the location where they were found and the state they were in. The work involved the collaboration of the Lagos Fire Service.
Preventive detention determined by investigating judge
The suspect, who had no known criminal record, was brought before the investigating judge in Portimão, who ordered the most serious measure of coercion: preventive detention.
