The sporting competition attracts not only millions of supporters and 48 national teams. The event also serves as bait for digital criminals, who exploit the tournament's popularity to set up fraud schemes.
Even before the matches began, illicit activity on the internet was already recording significant growth. In the first five months of the year, more than 13,000 new web pages associated with the championship were registered. Of this total, approximately 9% were identified as suspicious or clearly fraudulent.
The scams identified include fake sports betting platforms and illegal broadcasts of games. Criminals also created virtual shops selling counterfeit merchandise, non-existent job offers, forged tickets and even fake sticker albums.
