Man arrested in Tavira convicted in France for arms trafficking and money laundering
The Judicial Police have arrested in Tavira a 40-year-old Franco-Portuguese man convicted to five years' imprisonment in France for arms trafficking and money laundering.
Suspect caught in the Algarve with European arrest warrant
The Judicial Police arrested in Tavira, in the Algarve, a 40-year-old man sought by French authorities, according to Correio da Manhã. The detainee, of Franco-Portuguese nationality, was convicted in France to five years' imprisonment for arms trafficking and money laundering.
The arrest was carried out by the Criminal Information Unit of the Judicial Police, under a European arrest warrant issued by French judicial authorities.
Grenades and money found at a motorway toll booth
The facts underlying the proceedings date back to 2023, when customs officers searched a vehicle driven by the now-detained man at a motorway toll booth. Inside the vehicle, 18,720 euros in cash, two grenades, a pistol, a magazine and five 9-millimetre rounds of ammunition were found.
Subsequent investigations conducted by French authorities identified other cases of transport of prohibited goods and money between Portugal and the Normandy region, according to the Judicial Police.
Brought before the Court of Appeal of Évora
The detainee will be brought before the Court of Appeal of Évora for the application of precautionary measures, concludes the Judicial Police.
