Public Ministry opens investigation into national director of the Judicial Police
The Public Ministry is investigating the national director of the Judicial Police (PJ), Carlos Cabreiro, and other officials of the corporation on suspicions of false statements and abuse of power, according to eco.sapo.pt. The Prosecutor General confirmed to Expresso the opening of the investigation: "the opening of an investigation is confirmed". The PJ refused to provide clarification on the matter.
The investigation stems from a complaint filed on 27 July by David Freitas, a coordinator at the PJ. One of the suspicions relates to statements made by Cabreiro in court in connection with the case involving hacker Rui Pinto. According to the complaint, the director allegedly stated that no telephone interceptions were carried out in that investigation — an allegation that David Freitas contests and which, in his view, may constitute the crime of false statements.
The second suspicion concerns an interception which, according to the complaint, was allegedly ordered by Carlos Cabreiro despite the Public Ministry having previously prohibited its implementation. It is in this episode that David Freitas identifies possible indications of abuse of power.
