Two men assault uncle and nephew over refused cigarette in Lisbon and released
Two men aged 24 and 26 violently assaulted two people in the Casalinho da Ajuda area. The older victim, aged 69, remains hospitalised.
Attackers released after beating over cigarette in Lisbon
Two men, aged 24 and 26, were released by judicial decision after brutally assaulting a 69-year-old man and his nephew, aged 46, in the Casalinho da Ajuda area in Lisbon. The reason was the refusal of a cigarette. The case was reported by Correio da Manhã.
The incident occurred at 07h50 on 8 September. The two attackers approached the younger man and asked him for a cigarette, which he gave them. When they asked him for a second one, the response was negative — and it was this refusal that triggered the assault.
The uncle, aged 69, intervened to help his nephew and ended up being beaten as well. The assaults were so serious that the older man lost consciousness at the scene.
The PSP was called to the location and requested urgent medical assistance for both victims. The nephew was discharged the same day. The uncle, however, had to return to hospital after an initial discharge, due to health complications, and remained hospitalised at the time of publication of the news.
The two attackers were detained two days after the incident by investigators from PSP Lisbon. Despite this, a judge at the Campus de Justiça in Lisbon ordered their release, with them subject only to weekly check-ins with the authorities and prohibitions on contact with the victims.
