A 45-year-old foreign national was detained early this morning in Lagos on strong suspicion of committing two aggravated homicides and desecration of a corpse, according to rtp.pt. The victims are a couple of foreign nationals — a 79-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman — healthcare sector entrepreneurs who have been resident in Portugal for several years.
The detention was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department of Portimão of the Judicial Police, with the collaboration of the GNR in Lagos. The suspect worked as a caretaker at the victims' residence, where the events took place, pointing to a picture of extreme violence.
In the initial phase, the victims were reportedly assaulted with a blunt object, which caused them serious injuries resulting in death. Subsequently, the suspect dragged the bodies into a water cistern on the property, with the aim of concealing them, and also attempted to decompose them using chemical products.
When he was located in the vicinity of the scene by the GNR in Lagos, the detainee was in possession of a considerable sum of money and valuable objects presumed to belong to the victims. The motive for the crime remains to be established.
The removal of the bodies required a lengthy and complex operation, carried out with the collaboration of the Lagos Fire Brigade, due to the conditions of the location where they were hidden and the state in which they were found.
The detainee, with no known criminal record, will be presented to the Criminal Instruction Court of Portimão for initial interrogation and application of coercive measures.
