Businessman from Caldas da Rainha tried for domestic violence in Leiria
Leiria Court has begun trial of 58-year-old man accused of domestic violence. Complainant faces investigation for perjury.

Complainant may face charges for perjury following contradictory statements in court
Leiria Court began on Wednesday the trial of a 58-year-old businessman from Caldas da Rainha, accused of the crimes of domestic violence and trespassing in a place closed to the public. The alleged victim is a 45-year-old ex-girlfriend.
According to Correio da Manhã, the complainant will be subject to an investigation for a crime of perjury, due to "absolutely relevant discrepancies" between the statements she made throughout the proceedings and the testimony she gave during the trial hearing.
The defendant refused to make a statement during the hearing. His solicitor stated before the court that "there was never any romantic relationship" between his client and the complainant.
To the contrary, the alleged victim gave a lengthy statement in which she described a "romantic relationship" with the defendant between June 2020 and October 2024. According to the complainant, the relationship had "several breaks", always at her initiative, but of short duration — only "a few days".
The trial continues on 21 May.
