Telephone intercepts from the 'Águas Turvas' investigation reveal that suspects of corruption at municipal company 'Águas de Gaia' intended to continue manipulating contracts, even after an external consultant was integrated into the company's structure, according to Correio da Manhã.
The investigation culminated in the detention of 13 people. The wiretaps collected during the investigation show that the employees did not intend to stop the illicit practices — merely to temporarily postpone their continuation to avoid raising suspicions.
The arrival of Poças Martins at the management of 'Águas de Gaia' was ordered by Luís Filipe Menezes, president of the local authority, at the beginning of the year. It was precisely at that time that conversations between employees suspected of wrongdoing, captured by authorities, revealed a containment strategy.
"It is still too early, it is better to wait a while to avoid raising suspicions, otherwise this will backfire on us," said Orlando Gonçalves, one of the targeted employees, to colleague António Costa, according to the wiretaps cited by Correio da Manhã.
