A former PSP commander was sentenced by Leiria Court to serve four years and three months in prison, with the sentence suspended for five years subject to conditions, for crimes committed against his partner and her parents. Região de Leiria
The defendant, aged 42 and with no criminal record, was found guilty by the panel of judges for aggravated spousal abuse, two cases of aggravated intimidation, three illegal entries into private spaces and one physical assault. Seven accusations of serious threats were dismissed.
The court president emphasised the seriousness of the acts, particularly coming from someone who belonged to the security forces and had experience in a unit combating domestic violence. The magistrate described the defendant's behaviour as "obsessive and impulsive", unacceptable in today's times.
According to the Public Prosecutor's accusation, the victim suffered continuous psychological subjection from the beginning of their relationship. The aggressor hurled humiliating insults at her, beat her and promised to eliminate her and her parents. In one specific incident, upon discovering that his partner was recording the assault on her mobile phone, he beat her, stamped on her feet and scratched her ear, which required medical assistance.
The former police officer exploited his institutional knowledge to intimidate the victim, mentioning on-call magistrates to make her believe that reports would be futile.
The sentence also imposes mandatory separation from his wife — except for matters concerning their common child — and a ban on possessing weapons, both for five years. He is also required to undergo psychological, psychiatric and medical monitoring if necessary.
The ex-officer must pay compensation of 9,500 euros to the victims. He had already been expelled from the force through a disciplinary process, by means of an ordinance from the Minister of Internal Administration published in June in the Official Gazette.
