The former director and ex-chairman of a residential care facility for elderly people in Matosinhos face criminal charges for spreading contagious disease with fatal consequences. The case dates back to the early months of the covid-19 pandemic, when an outbreak at the facility caused eighteen deaths among residents.
According to the prosecution by the Public Ministry, disclosed by Correio da Manhã, the then director of the institution, Marta Soares, and the former chairman, José Moura, refused to provide workers with safety equipment that had been supplied by the municipal council. The set of materials, comprising gloves, masks and disinfectant products, was delivered to the facility on 9 April 2020, but remained stored in a prominent space in the building.
In the absence of adequate protection, the former manager reportedly instructed staff to use refuse bags as a substitute for protective gowns. Days after the decision not to distribute the equipment, the first death among residents occurred. In total, one hundred and nine residents contracted the infection: eighteen did not survive and three suffered serious physical consequences.
