The GNR has issued a warning about a new fraud in which victims receive a bank card at home and lose money when attempting to activate it.

The GNR has alerted the public to a new type of financial fraud in circulation in Portugal, according to reports in Google News PT — Crime (pt). Victims receive at home a bank card which they did not request and, when attempting to activate it, end up losing money.
The scheme exploits citizens' trust in seemingly legitimate communications. The card arrives accompanied by instructions that lead the recipient to contact a telephone number or access an online address to proceed with activation — the moment at which personal and financial data are compromised.
The National Republican Guard recommends that anyone who receives an unsolicited bank card should not follow the enclosed instructions and should contact their banking institution directly to confirm the authenticity of the dispatch.
The authorities also urge the reporting of suspicious situations to the security forces, emphasising that this type of fraud is becoming increasingly frequent in the country.
