A prison guard aged approximately 40 was assaulted by a visitor at the Lisbon Prison Establishment on Monday morning. The assailant, allegedly a former inmate, was detained and taken to the police station.

A prison guard aged approximately 40 was assaulted at around 10am on Monday at the Lisbon Prison Establishment (EPL), according to CNN Portugal. The incident occurred as visitors were leaving the facilities.

The suspect, identified as an alleged former inmate, refused to comply with orders to leave the room and continued speaking towards the yard where inmates from Wing A were on their recreation period. The prison guard intervened to force him to leave the area and was assaulted by the visitor.

The man was accompanied by a child when the incident occurred. Following the assault, the guard was transported to hospital for medical examinations. The lip wound required three stitches.

The alleged assailant was detained and taken to the police station.
