A 59-year-old man, resident in Algueirão-Mem Martins, municipality of Sintra, was detained by the PSP and remanded in custody after deliberately hitting a 48-year-old ex-girlfriend with his car in Cascais. The suspect had previously served a sentence for the homicide of another former partner and has a history of domestic violence offences.
The incident occurred on 23 May. The victim, with whom the man had been living since 2021, had ended the relationship, which he was unable to accept. According to a description from the PSP, cited by Correio da Manhã, the aggressor had threatened the woman, demanding that she leave the country and warning that he would kill her if she entered into a new relationship.
Responding to the detainee's insistence, the victim agreed to meet him in a public space in Cascais. The man justified the meeting as being necessary to administer an intramuscular injection to relieve her pain. When she arrived at the agreed location, the woman indicated to him where he should park. Unexpectedly, the driver accelerated in the direction of his ex-partner, who was standing with her back to the vehicle on the pavement. The car hit metal bollards, mounted the pavement and struck the victim's legs, causing her to fall to the ground.
Despite her injuries, the woman managed to get up and took refuge in a nearby hotel. The aggressor took possession of the mobile phone that she had dropped and left the scene without providing any assistance. The victim presented with pain, bruises and abrasions to her legs and arms.
The PSP conducted the investigation and detained the man on Tuesday of the following week. During a search of the vehicle, officers seized a kitchen knife with a 12.5-centimetre blade. The court ordered the suspect to be remanded in custody.
