A 32-year-old man was arrested on Monday in Lisbon, suspected of committing five counts of sexual abuse against a 9-year-old boy, his neighbour. The arrest was announced on Friday by the Judiciary Police (PJ), according to observador.pt.
The suspect, a foreign national in irregular situation in Portugal for two years, was "considered a trusted person" by the victim's family, which gave him "easy access to the child", the PJ explained in a statement. The victim was described as "especially vulnerable".
It was the boy himself who reported the facts to his father, and was subsequently referred for clinical care in the areas of psychology and paediatrics. The psychologist accompanying him reported the case directly to the Judiciary Police.
The investigation identified evidence of at least five counts of child sexual abuse in its aggravated form. Present at his first judicial interrogation at Lourès Court, in the Lisbon district, the detainee was placed in preventive detention as a precautionary measure.
The child and his family were referred to victim support services.
