33-year-old man detained for million-euro fraud using father's car dealership contacts
The Judicial Police, with support from the Aveiro PSP, detained a 33-year-old individual suspected of committing several qualified fraud crimes using electronic means. The losses caused to the victims amount to several thousand euros.
The people targeted by the scheme were former customers of the automobile sales business that belonged to the detainee's father, who is now deceased. The dealership was inherited by the suspect, who then began using the establishment's contact list to locate potential targets.
From 2023 to the present, the man approached the victims in person or through digital platforms, convincing them to hand over sums of money. The justification he presented was that the money was needed to resolve supposed problems resulting from previous transactions carried out with that dealership.
The Judicial Police states in a statement that the defendant "made this criminal practice his way of life", with no known legitimate work activity known to him.
The detainee will be brought before a judge so that appropriate coercive measures may be applied. The investigation is being handled by the Penafiel Department of Investigation and Criminal Action.
