34-year-old man remanded in custody for six sexual offences against minor in Lisbon

The Criminal Police detained a 34-year-old man in the Lisbon area on suspicion of six offences of sexual abuse of a minor dependant or in a particularly vulnerable situation, reported observador.pt on Monday. The suspect was remanded in custody after being heard at his first judicial hearing at Lisbon Court.
According to the Criminal Police, the investigation was conducted by the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Directorate. The facts occurred between July and September this year and involve acts of a sexual nature perpetrated against a 15-year-old minor, described as "particularly vulnerable", with whom the detainee cohabited and maintained a relationship of trust within a familial context.
The situation came to light when the minor herself disclosed the facts. Her mother subsequently took her to a hospital unit, where healthcare professionals reported their suspicions to the Criminal Police.
The minor underwent clinical examinations and forensic medical examinations, carried out in the hospital setting and by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Sciences, with a view to assessing injuries and gathering evidence relevant to the investigation.
The Criminal Police stated in a statement that "the evidence collected in the meantime allowed the investigation to be consolidated regarding the suspect's participation in the facts in question", with the detention being effected outside of flagrante delicto, in the city of Lisbon. The suspect was subsequently brought before his first judicial hearing, after which the judge applied the custodial measure of remand in custody.
