42-year-old man arrested for deliberate hit-and-run in Caldas da Rainha
A man deliberately struck two people with a vehicle following a brawl in a bar area in Caldas da Rainha. The suspect was brought before a court and remanded in home detention with electronic monitoring.

The PSP arrested a 42-year-old man suspected of deliberately striking two individuals with a vehicle in Caldas da Rainha, following a brawl that occurred on Saturday afternoon in a bar area on Praça 5 de Outubro. The case was reported by regiaodeleiria.pt based on a PSP statement.
The suspect is charged with the crime of attempted qualified homicide. According to the PSP, he drove "a motor vehicle deliberately in the direction of two of those involved in the brawl, striking them" and causing them "various injuries, namely to the head and lower limbs".
The brawl involved a group of five men, aged between 27 and 42, who were in a bar on that square. The confrontations included "physical assaults, as well as the throwing of beer glasses and bottles, some of which were directed at the heads of those involved", according to the PSP. The assaults extended to the pavement outside the establishment, where the participants continued to chase one another. At a dispersal stage, the now-arrested man allegedly struck the victims with the vehicle.
In the initial phase of police intervention, the PSP deployed lower-lethal coercive means — pepper spray and an incapacitating electrical device (Taser) — "given the numerical superiority of those involved, the high level of aggression demonstrated and the imminent risk to the physical integrity of those present".
After controlling the situation, officers identified all those involved, one of whom presented "the most concerning clinical picture". The Caldas da Rainha Volunteer Fire Service and an INEM team were called, with four of the men transported to Caldas da Rainha Hospital for examination and treatment.
The arrested man was brought before Leiria Court, which imposed the restraint measure of obligation to remain in his residence with electronic monitoring. The PSP states that the suspect has "an extensive history of criminal records registered in the Caldas da Rainha area", being referenced for crimes against physical integrity, crimes against personal freedom — including threats using a firearm — crimes against property and offences related to drug trafficking.
The Judicial Police were activated and are investigating the attempted murder, taking into account the nature of the facts and the severity of the injuries caused.
