A 48-year-old man with problematic drug use has been arrested on sexual abuse charges against his own mother, a 92-year-old woman who suffers from advanced dementia and requires permanent assistance. The incidents occurred in Porto da Cruz, on the island of Madeira.
According to reporting by Correio da Manhã, the accused waited for his sister — who is responsible for the elderly woman's daily care — to leave the house before committing the acts. When she returned, the woman discovered her brother, triggering an aggressive response from him.
The detainee confronted his sister with intimidation and physical assault, a circumstance that led to the Police Service of Public Security (PSP) being called. Officers proceeded to apprehend the suspect and began investigations.
The Public Prosecutor's Office indicates that the accused faces charges under three criminal statutes: sexual assault of a person without capacity to resist, light bodily injury and unlawful coercion. Given that the main victim lacks the discernment to exercise the right to file a complaint due to her neurodegenerative condition, the Public Prosecutor's Office took the initiative of that right, proceeding with the case in defence of the elderly woman.
On Monday, the man was brought before a judge, who ordered his detention pending trial. The investigation continues under the direction of the Judicial Police.
