49-year-old man detained again for forest fires in Águeda

Second detention in two weeks for fires in Águeda municipality
The Criminal Police (PJ) has again detained a 49-year-old man suspected of setting forest fires in Águeda municipality, Aveiro district, approximately 15 days after a first detention for the same type of crime, according to sol.iol.pt.
According to the PJ, the suspect allegedly set a fire in Serém de Cima on Wednesday late afternoon, in an area with extensive forest cover and several homes and other buildings in the vicinity. The fire did not reach larger proportions as it was detected early, which allowed rapid intervention by firefighting resources.
At the first detention, the court had determined as precautionary measures the obligation of periodic check-ins and subjection to treatment for alcohol dependency.
The PJ investigation also points to the existence of other ignitions recorded this year in the immediate vicinity of Wednesday's fire location. These cases present similar modus operandi and are under investigation, with the now detained individual referenced as the presumed author of all these occurrences.
The police indicate that it has not been possible to identify, to date, a rational motivation or a plausible explanation for the investigated facts. The suspect's actions appear to be associated with a possible alcoholism condition and a strong compulsivity for committing this type of crime. The man resides near the locations where the fires occurred.
The suspect will be presented for first judicial interrogation, where any precautionary measures to be applied will be determined.
