The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested a 52-year-old man who is strongly suspected of starting a forest fire recorded on 24 May in Louredo, Amarante, the police force announced this Monday. According to observador.pt, the suspect allegedly set the fire using direct flame, "apparently following a dispute with neighbours".
The fire placed a significant forest area at risk, as well as several buildings, particularly residences in the area and within the forest itself, the PJ states in a statement.
The detainee, who lives near the location, will be presented for his first judicial interrogation for the application of restraint measures. The PJ was supported by the GNR during the arrest. The investigation is being handled by the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action in Amarante.
