Suspect set fire with lighter in rural area of Famalicão

The Judicial Police arrested, outside of flagrante delicto, a 52-year-old man suspected of causing a forest fire in the parish of Landim, municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, on 11 July, according to policiajudiciaria.pt.

The arrest was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department of Braga, following the collection of circumstantial evidence pointing to the suspect as the author of the fire, which was started by direct flame using a lighter.

The fire broke out in the late afternoon on a hot and dry day, with wind and elevated temperatures. The location is in a rural area with conditions conducive to the spread of flames, and generated significant risk to agricultural fields and several nearby houses.

According to the investigation, the man — a resident of the parish itself — acted for reasons of a personal nature, being aware that his conduct was prohibited by law and represented imminent danger to nature, populations and property of third parties.

After the first judicial interrogation, the defendant was ordered to report fortnightly to the authorities and was prohibited from carrying lighters, matches or any object that would allow him to start a fire. It was also determined that he should undergo psychiatric consultations and take appropriate medication.
