61-year-old man detained for drug trafficking in Caldas da Rainha with stolen firearm

The GNR detained a 61-year-old man on Wednesday, 30 September, in Santa Suzana, in the municipality of Caldas da Rainha, on suspicion of drug trafficking, according to gazetadascaldas.pt.

The detention took place during a patrol operation by the Caldas da Rainha Territorial Post. Military personnel from the Leiria Territorial Command intercepted a vehicle and detected "an odour of narcotic substance" coming from inside.

The driver voluntarily handed over a bag containing drugs. Following personal search and vehicle search, the military personnel confirmed that the man was carrying 23 doses of heroin and 42 doses of cocaine, as well as 775 euros in cash and a mobile phone.

This was followed by a home search which resulted in the seizure of a further 102 doses of heroin, 82 doses of cocaine and 209 doses of cannabis, eight methadone packages and two scales. A further 430 euros in cash were collected, a shotgun that "is listed as stolen" and 18 cartridges of calibre 12.

The defendant was brought before a first judicial hearing on Thursday, 1 October, at the Caldas da Rainha District Court, pending the application of precautionary measures.
