A 33-year-old man was apprehended in flagrante by police in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira whilst physically assaulting his mother, an elderly woman. The assault occurred in a public space, with the suspect striking the victim with punches and kicks.
The police intervention took place on Sunday, following several reports from witnesses who observed the assaults. When officers arrived at the scene, they sighted the man assaulting his mother. Upon the arrival of the authorities, the individual fled into the residence where both lived and barricaded himself in the property.
With the permission of the property owner, PSP officers forced their way into the house. The detainee, of robust physical build, mounted strong resistance to arrest, forcing officers to use force to immobilise and handcuff him. Inside the property, the attacker was causing significant material damage.
The victim, visibly terrorised, told authorities that she had previously been assaulted by her son. The woman added that the attacker had previously threatened to kill her, using a bladed weapon.
Brought before a court, the man was placed in pre-trial detention.
