A 44-year-old man was arrested red-handed by GNR officers from Mafra on Monday when he attempted to break open an alms box inside a religious building in the Ericeira area.
The arrest resulted from increased patrols and police surveillance in the region following receipt of several reports of thefts from homes and chapels. The officers surprised the man at the exact moment he was forcing open a wooden chest intended to collect donations, with the intention of taking the money.
The suspect was constituted as a defendant and the case referred to the competent court in Mafra. Authorities are still investigating his possible connection to other burglaries of residences in the same geographical area.
