Man arrested in Leiria to serve seven-year sentence for three attempted murders
A 39-year-old man was arrested at his home in Leiria to serve a seven-year prison sentence. The sentence was imposed for three counts of attempted aggravated homicide, dating from October 2024.
The facts date back to a night when the PSP was called to Santo André Hospital in that city. Three men were admitted to the emergency department with injuries caused by a bladed weapon.
The assaults took place near a restaurant in the São Romão area of Leiria. It all started with a dispute between a couple. When a person who witnessed the scene attempted to calm tensions, the attacker threatened them. Other citizens rushed to defend that witness, leading to a physical confrontation.
During the brawl, the man wielded a knife and wounded three people in various parts of their bodies, then fled the scene. One of the victims had serious injuries to the stomach and neck, and underwent an emergency operation with a risk to life.
Following the criminal investigation and with the conviction becoming final in May 2026, an arrest warrant was issued. The man was found at his residence, where he was under electronic surveillance while awaiting the outcome of his appeals.
He was then taken to Leiria Prison to begin serving his sentence.
