Third detention for domestic violence in Sintra results in preventive custody
A 47-year-old man was held in preventive custody after being detained for the third time for alleged acts of domestic violence against his ex-partner in Sintra. The PSP announced the measure on Thursday, confirming that the detention was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Squad of Cascais, of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command.
According to CNN Portugal, this is the "third detention of the suspect for facts related to the same victim", in a situation where the alleged conduct continued despite previous police and judicial interventions.
The man had been convicted in May of this year to a three-year prison sentence, suspended in its execution, within the scope of a domestic violence proceeding involving the same ex-partner. On 11 August, new facts led to a second detention, and precautionary measures were applied to him: daily presentations before the authorities and a prohibition on travelling to Sintra council, monitored by electronic surveillance.
Despite these restrictions, the suspect allegedly continued to adopt "intimidating and threatening behaviour directed at the victim", according to the PSP statement. Between August and September, on different occasions and in the presence of the ex-partner, the man allegedly made gestures near his neck simulating a throat-slashing.
Given the alleged repetition of the conduct and the elements gathered during the investigation, the judicial authority issued new arrest warrants. After the first judicial interrogation, the suspect was subjected to the most serious precautionary measure: preventive custody.
The PSP emphasises that domestic violence is a public crime and appeals for the reporting of all situations of this kind, noting that timely intervention can prevent escalation of violence and protect victims.
