Arrested in Serpa for assault on partner inside residence

A 48-year-old man was arrested by the GNR on Sunday in Vila Nova de São Bento, in the municipality of Serpa, district of Beja, suspected of domestic violence against his 43-year-old partner. The case was disclosed on Monday by the Territorial Command of Beja, as reported by observador.pt.

Officers from the Territorial Post of Serpa were alerted to a domestic violence situation and, upon arriving at the location, established that the suspect had physically assaulted his partner during an argument inside the home, causing her "visible injuries to the face", according to the GNR statement.

In the presence of the authorities, the man maintained "repeated patterns of psychological and verbal violence against the victim, characterised by insults, humiliation and controlling behaviour". One of the couple's minor children witnessed the assault and was the one who alerted the authorities.

During the police intervention, the suspect "adopted a hostile posture, disobeying the lawful orders of the Guarda officers", offering resistance both at the moment of arrest and during transport to police facilities, the GNR adds.

The detainee was formally named as a suspect and presented for initial judicial questioning at Serpa Court on Monday. He was released on bail but subject to various restraining measures: in addition to a signed undertaking regarding identity and residence, he is prohibited from contacting the victim and the minors, from remaining in the shared residence and is required to maintain a minimum distance of 100 metres from his partner.
