The fire occurred on 23 August at 21:00 in the locality of Landedo, district of Bragança. According to the Judicial Police, the man is believed to have used a lighter to start the flames, and is strongly implicated in the commission of a forest fire crime.
"The fire resulted in a burnt area of approximately 13 hectares of forest composed of shrub and subshrub layer densely planted, as well as scattered chestnut and oak trees," the Judicial Police stated.
The same source stressed that without "the intervention of several fire brigades," the fire could have destroyed agricultural sheds and houses in the area.
