A 55-year-old man was arrested by the GNR in Setúbal and remanded in custody after tying his girlfriend to a chair for approximately 24 hours, according to Correio da Manhã. The incident occurred in Palmela and included repeated physical assaults, humiliation and threats with a knife.
The suspect allegedly forced the victim to provide access codes to her mobile phone before immobilising her. During the period in which he kept her deprived of liberty, he assaulted her repeatedly and threatened her with a knife, in accordance with a statement released by the Guard on Friday.
One-year relationship marked by control and jealousy
The GNR indicates that the couple had been in a relationship for one year and three months, but did not share a residence. "During the relationship, the suspect adopted controlling and jealous behaviour, which culminated in episodes of physical and psychological violence", the Guard states in the same statement.
According to the authorities, the suspect assaulted the victim inside her residence before forcing her to hand over the mobile phone codes. "In the course of the investigation, it was established that the suspect assaulted the victim inside her residence and forced her to provide the access codes to her mobile phone. Subsequently, he tied the victim to a chair, keeping her deprived of liberty for approximately 24 hours, during which time he assaulted her repeatedly, humiliated her and threatened her with a knife", the GNR describes.
Victim frees herself the following morning and receives hospital care
The victim managed to free herself the following morning and called for help. At that point, the suspect had already left the premises. As a result of the assaults suffered, the woman received hospital care, the GNR adds.
The man was subsequently arrested by the GNR in Setúbal and is in custody.
