PSP officers arrested a 44-year-old man on Thursday at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon who was wanted by Israeli authorities on suspicion of financial fraud, money laundering and other economic crimes, according to sol.iol.pt.
The arrest occurred during a border control operation following an international arrest warrant issued by Israeli justice authorities and circulated by Interpol.
According to the PSP, the suspect worked at a financial services company and is accused of embezzling more than nine million shekels — approximately €2.68 million — through alleged fraudulent financial transactions and the use of third-party entities.
Israeli authorities have attributed to him the presumed commission of several economic crimes: misappropriation of funds, obtaining financial advantage through fraud, falsification of corporate records, breach of trust in a business context, money laundering and provision of misleading information to investors.
The investigation points to a scheme that is believed to have enabled the embezzlement of significant amounts belonging to the company where he worked, causing considerable losses to the investors involved.
Following his arrest, the man will be brought before the Lisbon Court of Appeal, which will decide on the application of precautionary measures whilst the extradition process requested by Israel is ongoing.
The PSP did not disclose the identity of the arrested man and provided no further details about the ongoing investigation.
