The Judicial Police detained a 44-year-old man suspected of a homicide that occurred on 31 May in Coimbra, according to 24.sapo.pt. The detainee and the victim were both homeless and worked informally as car park attendants.
According to the PJ, the dispute arose from a quarrel over the space where the two men worked in public. During the altercation, the suspect struck the victim on the head with a wooden baton, causing the man to fall and lose consciousness momentarily.
After the assault, the victim, 53 years old, returned to the place where he habitually slept. He was found dead the following day. The forensic medical examination indicated head trauma as the probable cause of death.
The defendant was detained outside flagrante delicto by the PJ's Central Department and will be brought before the competent judicial authority for initial judicial questioning, being subject to the application of restraint measures deemed appropriate.
