A 67-year-old man was detained by the Judicial Police of Vila Real, accused of having caused multiple forest fires in the municipality of Vinhais, situated in Bragança district.
According to the authorities, the individual resorted to an open flame to create various ignition points in areas of dry vegetation. After starting each fire, he would leave the location without taking any measures to contain or extinguish the flames, exposing the area to a high risk of spread to the adjacent forest.
The fire subsequently spread to both public and private parcels in the surrounding area, destroying undergrowth, chestnut trees and oak trees. The situation also threatened communities residing in nearby localities. The prompt action of the fire brigades was decisive in preventing more serious damage.
At the conclusion of the investigation led by the PJ, the suspect was captured and taken for initial questioning. The court applied the restraining measure of a signed statement of identity and residence.
