A 36-year-old man who was serving a house arrest sentence in the town of Peso da Régua was detained by PSP officers in the Lisbon area when he attempted to approach his former partner. The suspect had destroyed the tracking device that had been fitted to him by the prison authorities.
The incident occurred on 23 June, when the offender damaged the monitoring equipment. Immediately, the competent authorities issued an alert to the various police forces across the country. PSP officers in the Lisbon metropolitan area gathered evidence that the individual was heading towards the capital with the intention of finding his former partner, the victim of abuse in a previous proceeding.
The police officers acted swiftly, managing to obtain the necessary judicial authorisation to proceed with the detention. The man was captured before reaching the victim's residence. Subsequently, he was brought before a judge, who ordered his imprisonment in a prison facility, revoking the initial house arrest measure.
The history dates back to an investigation into domestic violence, with the court having imposed on the defendant the serving of his sentence at home, accompanied by tracking technology. The breach of the sentence regime occurred when he destroyed the remote monitoring system.
