Inquiry opened against PJ director Carlos Cabreiro over false statements and abuse of power
The Public Ministry is investigating Carlos Cabreiro, national director of the PJ, on suspicion of false statements in the trial of Rui Pinto and abuse of power.

The Public Ministry has opened an inquiry against Carlos Cabreiro, national director of the Judicial Police (PJ), and other officials of the corporation, on suspicion of false statements and abuse of power. Confirmation was given by the Attorney General to the weekly publication Expresso: "the opening of an inquiry is confirmed". The PJ refused to provide clarification on the matter.
According to Público, the case originated from a complaint presented on 27 July by David Freitas, coordinator of the PJ. At issue are, among other matters, statements made by Cabreiro in court in the context of proceedings related to hacker Rui Pinto.
According to the complaint, the PJ director allegedly stated before the court that telephone interceptions had not been carried out during that investigation. David Freitas contests this claim and considers that it may constitute the crime of false statements.
The second suspicion concerns an interception which, according to the complaint, was allegedly ordered by Cabreiro himself despite the Public Ministry having previously prohibited its carrying out. It is in this episode that Freitas identifies possible signs of abuse of power.
