Jury to decide case of brothers who killed their father in Laranjeiras
The trial of two brothers accused of killing their father in Laranjeiras, in Lisbon, will take place before a jury court, following a request made by the defence and accepted by the court. According to Correio da Manhã, the lawyers are now working on the objections, with the selection of jurors awaited.
The crime occurred on 29 April 2025. Following the homicide, the two brothers hid their father's body in a wardrobe at the residence for three days, before the case was discovered.
The defence argues that the defendants acted to protect their mother, who was a victim of domestic violence. Attacks on the sons were also, according to the lawyers, a constant within the family. The lawyers consider that the circumstances of the facts justify joint evaluation by jurors and by a panel of judges.
The Public Prosecution Service had requested the maximum sentence of 25 years' imprisonment. The defendants, dissatisfied with this position, requested the opening of preliminary investigation. The investigating judge considered the accusation incoherent and downgraded the crime to simple homicide, with the charge of desecration of a corpse being dismissed. The mother was cleared and will not be present at trial.
The Public Prosecution Service appealed the preliminary investigation decision, so the matter will now be considered by the Lisbon Court of Appeal before the case proceeds to the trial phase.
