Detained in Évora for aggravated domestic violence and coercive control

A 20-year-old man was detained in Évora on suspicion of psychological and physical abuse of his 23-year-old ex-partner, including controlling behaviour and harassment following the couple's separation. The detention, announced on Monday, was reported by Correio da Manhã.

According to a statement from the Regional Public Prosecutor's Office in Évora, the Public Ministry (PM) indicated that the suspect is charged with the crime of aggravated domestic violence against the woman.

"It is strongly established that, at least from August 2025 until the date of detention, the accused repeatedly inflicted psychological and physical abuse on the victim," the PM's statement reads.

Following their de facto separation, which took place in November 2025, the suspect allegedly then initiated "intense controlling and harassment conduct, including through social media and other means of communication," according to the PM.

Detention outside of flagrante delicto

Given the escalation of coercive controlling behaviour and the risk of victimisation considered to be very serious, the PM ordered the issuing of detention warrants outside of flagrante delicto. The detention took place last Thursday.

The accused was brought before a first judicial interrogation on Friday, and several measures of coercion were imposed on him. Among them, a prohibition from approaching places where the victim is located and from contacting her by any means.

The detainee is also prohibited from approaching the victim's residence and workplace within a radius of 500 metres, a measure monitored by technical remote monitoring means — an electronic ankle bracelet.

An obligation was also imposed to undergo monitoring and treatment in the field of psychology, with a view to controlling behaviours associated with the commission of domestic violence.

Investigation continues with assistance from the PSP

Investigations are being conducted by the 2nd specialised section of the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP) in Évora, with the assistance of the PSP.
