Young man arrested in Setúbal over knife attack that left victim paralysed
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of Setúbal arrested an individual aged 26, suspected of violently stabbing a 27-year-old youth in Baixa da Banheira, in Moita. The incident occurred on 16 June, around two in the afternoon, in a public area of the locality.
According to the authorities, the detained man crossed paths by chance with the person he would go on to assault. The latter was a relative of another man with whom the presumed attacker had argued a few days previously. Upon recognising him, he pursued him and, after catching up with him, inflicted a cutting blow to the neck region with a razor blade.
The resulting injuries were extremely serious. In addition to threatening the victim's survival, the wound damaged the spinal column, causing sudden and total paralysis of both legs.
The arrest of the suspect took place following the crime, without him being caught in the act. After being brought before a court for initial questioning, the judge imposed the most severe bail measure, ordering that the defendant remain in pre-trial detention during the course of proceedings.
The case falls under the remit of the Investigation and Criminal Action Department of Moita, which will conduct subsequent proceedings.
