Fifty-year-old Lisbon resident fabricated theft to claim insurance compensation
Lisbon's PSP arrested a middle-aged man who attempted to deceive authorities and an insurance company. The case dates back to 27 May, when the individual presented himself at a police station in the capital alleging he had been a victim of robbery.
According to the Metropolitan Command, the 50-year-old citizen claimed that unknown individuals had stolen his mobile phone. However, during questioning, officers noticed contradictions and weaknesses in the story he had told. A more thorough analysis allowed them to discover several pieces of evidence that contradicted the version presented.
Confronted with the evidence, the suspect eventually confessed that the device had been lost and that his objective was to obtain compensation through his insurance policy. Given this situation, police proceeded to arrest him for the crime of simulation.
The PSP took the opportunity to issue a warning about the consequences of this type of behaviour. In addition to being punishable by law, invented complaints consume police and judicial resources that could be applied to real cases. Furthermore, these false occurrences fuel unfounded feelings of insecurity amongst the population and divert officers to areas where crimes do not actually need to be resolved.
